The IEC class schedule includes core and afternoon classes. The core classes consist of two periods of language skills instruction: Reading/Writing, and Speaking/Listening. Core classes meet daily Monday through Friday. Grading ranges from A to F.
Students will be assigned to classes for Grammar and Vocabulary, Communication Skills, American Culture through movies, Academic Skills through Reading, and Advanced Communication Skills based on their level of proficiency in the core classes. Most of the work is done in class but instructors may assign appropriate homework at their discretion. Afternoon classes meet Monday – Thursday. Grading for afternoon courses is based on coursework and participation. Grades from these courses will be added to core courses. If you have more than three absences, you will automatically receive a failing grade.
You must do the two following assignments to complete the program requirements.
All students are required to attend at least 8 times per session, and two or three 30-minute slots are available a day. Only four students can sign up for a slot. Conversation Practice schedules will be provided after the first week of the Spring session. Unsatisfactory performance in this practice can affect your final program grade.
The assignment will be to choose six of 10~15 lectures in each section, listen to them, and then write a response using the lecture response question list. This assignment is to help enhance students’ comprehension skills and prepare students for sitting in long lectures. Unsatisfactory performance in these classes will affect your final program grade – half a grade point will be subtracted for each U grading.
Students are provided the textbooks for core classes of their level assigned.
Grading ranges from A through F. The final grade is the average of all course components that will appear in the university transcript (SOLAR). Grading is based on participation, attendance, homework, classwork, exams, quizzes, and assignments. Students will be able to monitor their grades throughout the semester in Blackboard. Training will be provided to students on the use of Blackboard and SOLAR systems.
A course outline for each class will be given during the first week of the program. Specific criteria for grading and evaluation will be explained in detail by instructors in all classes. In addition to classwork and homework, there may be tests, quizzes and projects that students will be asked to complete.
Attendance is mandatory for all students. Students are expected to be on time. Any absence will affect grades and recommendations. Excessive absences may lead to failing grades or dismissal. Students will not receive a certificate of completion if they fail a class.
The attendance requirements are set and need to be followed because more than 50% of the work you do during this program is classwork which is graded. The teachers deliver lessons and provide explanations and corrections in class. Students participate in class discussions, pair work and group work. Therefore, in-class work provides you with the best opportunities to use your English. Once you have missed a class period, you have wasted a valuable experience which cannot be made up.
Any behavior creating disturbance in the class (ex. Sleeping, refusal to cooperate, using cell phone, etc.) will be marked as tardy or absent.
It is the responsibility of the student, not the IEC teachers or program, to track absences. If the IEC teachers or program administrators are not able to notify and /or meet with the student at probation or before the student reaches dismissal, the attendance policy is still enforced.
Please be in class every day to ensure your academic success at the IEC and at SUNY Korea.
After taking the placement exams, students are placed in an appropriate level. If a student disagrees with his/her placement, he/she must speak to the IEC Korea – Director who will consult with the instructors. Details of the placement exam result is not provided by the SBU IEC Policy. Students are required to attend classes at the level of the initial placement for a minimum of one week before any change can be considered. The final decision regarding a student’s placement rests with the IEC Director. Conversely, a student may be moved to a lower level due to poor performance.
All students are expected to behave in a respectful manner towards their teachers and classmates.
Cell phones must be turned off during class; photographing, videotaping or audio recording the class by students is prohibited. Students will be asked to leave the room and be marked absent if they do not follow these rules. Students are expected to be in class on time; if you are 15 minutes late you will be marked absent. Multiple bathroom or other type of breaks during a class period may also have an impact on grades. Students are expected to speak in English during class. Failure to do so will impact overall grade. Your grade will be reduced by 10% if you have repeated violations of classroom protocol. If you need to get in touch with your teacher outside of class time, please be aware that you may not get a response if you email your teacher after 5pm and/or on holidays and weekends.
IEC Korea wants all students to get the most out of their English studies and the best way to do this is to use English as much as possible. SUNY Korea also has students from different countries, so it is important that we all use the same language. English must be used in class as well as outside of class. Being immersed in an English-speaking environment will give students the opportunity to improve their English skills. This is why we actively enforce an “English Only Policy” on our campus.
The concept of academic integrity requires that you pursue your academic goals in an honest way that does not put you at an unfair advantage over your fellow students. You are expected to uphold academic integrity in everything you do: In every paper you write, in every assignment you submit, in every test you take. Plagiarism, intentionally or knowingly representing the words or ideas of another as your own words, is one of the things that represents academic dishonesty and is not permitted. Examples of plagiarism include: Submitting material that is partially or completely not your own work without giving a source, copying from a source without quotation marks or documentation, copying any source and just changing a word or two, rewording an idea found in a source and omitting documentation, having someone else write a paper for you, copying a paper or part of a paper that someone else has written, cloning someone else’s ideas without quoting the source of ideas. Please also note that using electronic translation (for example, Google Translate or Papago) is not acceptable for any assignment and will be considered plagiarism. If accused of plagiarism or other inappropriate behavior, such as cheating on exams or copying from a classmate you will be brought up on the official charge of academic dishonesty. Any assignments that a student plagiarizes will receive a zero (0) for the score, and the student will meet with the IEC Korea – Director to determine final action.
7th week of the session : A report will be issued to students as necessary to inform them about their status.
Students are not automatically moved up to the next level. You must complete a level with a grade of B or better.
Your new IEC Korea placement will depend upon your past performance. Therefore, it is possible for a student to repeat a level, move up one level, or even skip a level.
Students who want to remain in the IEC for more than one semester must meet the following criteria in order to be re-admitted:
Repeating students will meet with the IEC Korea-Director to evaluate their skills if they are not making adequate progress and a change of level may be required.
To be recommended for admission to SUNY Korea, prospective undergraduate students need to complete the advanced IEC Korea, Level 114, with a grade of B or better and satisfy all IEC Korea course and program requirements. Students who pass the TOEFL (iBT 80, or ITP 550), IELTS (6.5), or Duolingo English Test (105) while attending the IEC Korea Program at any level, are still expected to achieve a minimum of B average in their current IEC course in order to be cleared for undergraduate admission.
